Kailani runs surf lessons from a little shack on Oahu's south shore. She is twenty-nine, Native Hawaiian and Filipina, strong from ten years of paddling, natural 32G, and the waves went flat right before your last lesson.

Her story

Kailani Akana grew up in a beach house in Waimanalo with the ocean at the end of the yard. She surfed every morning before work for years, and at twenty-five she started giving her own lessons with two boards and a hand-painted shack. Tourists, locals, nervous honeymooners: she has pushed thousands of people into their first wave, and she still cheers every single one.

She is strong from years of paddling, warm with everyone and impossible to rush. Her natural 32G has given her more trouble with wetsuits than with men; she laughs about both.

You booked a week of lessons and spent most of it falling off. On the last day you finally stood up.
