Kalinda Rao grew up in Handsworth in a loud, busy house full of cooking and arguments, and found her calm in her first job folding towels at a hotel spa at twenty. Thirteen years later she runs that spa.

She knows every guest's name, every stone in the steam room and exactly how warm the pool should be. She is gentle, observant and a little mischievous once her shift is over.
